The Australian Citizenship Test


The Australian Citizenship Test is an integral step in completing your Citizenship application. Administered by the Australian Government, the test assesses applicants understanding of Australia's values, traditions, history, and governmental system. Passing the test proves you have an acceptable standard of English, knowledge of the privileges and responsibilities of Citizenship, and a commitment to the core values of Australia. It also ensures applicants understand and appreciate the rich history and culture of Australia.

Cost


There is no additional cost for sitting the test as the fee is included in the overall application fee.


Eligibility


Those aged between 18-59 on the day your Citizenship application is received generally must sit the test. However, there are certain circumstances in which applicants are exempt, these include:


  • Those who fall outside the age range at the time you apply for Citizenship,

  • Those who are the child of a former Australian citizen who lost their Australian citizenship under specific circumstances,

  • Those who were born in Papua before 16 September 1975 to an Australian citizen born in Australia,

  • Those who were born in Australia and have never been the citizen of another country and are not entitled to the citizenship of another country,

  • Those are unable to sit the test due to an incapacity or impairment.


Setting Up Test Appointment


Eligible test applicants will a letter with the date, time and place of your appointment from the Department. If you need to reschedule your appointment, follow the instructions in your appointment letter. Test appointments are held at departmental offices in most Australian capital cities, and some Services Australia (Centrelink) offices. If you lodge your application outside of Australia, you will be invited to complete your test upon your return. On exceptional circumstances it may be possible to arrange to sit your test at an Australian Embassy or Consulate outside of Australia.


The Day of Your Test


Applicants must bring a valid photo identity document on the day, Accepted documents include:


  • Passport

  • Australian Driving License

  • Australian Proof of Age Card


Certified copies or electronic images of photo ID are not permitted, failure to bring valid identification will result in your appointment being changed to a later date. You may also need to bring additional documents specified by the Department. Before attending your appointment ensure that you have attached all documents to your application in ImmiAccount.


Passing The Test


To pass the Citizenship test applicants must: answer all 20 questions in the test, answer all 5 questions based on Australian values correctly, and obtain a score of at least 75% in the test.

 

If you pass the test your application will proceed, however failing the will not stop the application process nor will it effect your permanent visa. Applicants can sit the test again for no extra fee. In the instance of three test failures there is a chance that your Citizenship application will be refused.
