On 9 May 2023, the Australian government announced that the planning levels for the 2023-24 permanent Migration Program will be set at 190,000 places. This is a slight reduction in the numbers of the previous year. Of the 190,000 places, it awarded 30,400 places in total to the States/Territories Migration program. This is a similar amount awarded in the previous year.
The 2023-24 allocation is 1,200 nomination places. The NSW government has received the following allocation for 2023-24:
Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) | 2,650 |
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) | 1,500 |
Business Innovation and Investment Program (BIIP) | 0 |
Total | 4,150 |
The Department of Home Affairs has reduced the allocation for NSW nominations back to pre-pandemic levels. It is also significantly smaller than the allocation that the NSW requested from the Department of Home Affairs. According to the Department, this is to allow the States and Territories to reduce the back log and the processing times for visa applicants currently in the system.
Unfortunately, the Department of Home Affairs has allocated no nomination places for the Business Innovation and Investment Program (BIIP) to the NSW. No State or Territory received nomination places under the 2023-24 program. The Department of Home Affairs has advised this decision is due to the limited number of BIIP places available within the 2023-24 Migration program and the high number of applications already on-hand. Existing first and second stage visas are still being processed under the BIIP.
The NSW BIIP is currently closed to new applications for 2023-24.
